Unless you spent the whole of  2016 tucked away on a remote island somewhere with no internet access then you would have heard of terms such as hygge, clean eating and minimalism.

Every year there are certain lifestyle buzz words that seem to circulate around along with certain lifestyle trends. I mean if you didn’t get rid of 90% of your possessions in a Marie Kondo style frenzy then were you even alive in 2016?

One word that you will probably hear a lot more of in 2017 is Mindfulness.

Mindfulness

‘The quality or state of being conscious or aware of something’

Mindfulness has been practised for centuries and is particularly popular with Buddhists as a form of meditation. It’s about being completely present in the here and now, without distractions or thoughts of the past or future.

The reason for its sudden popularity in the western world is mainly due to the advances in technology including social media and electronic devices. These days we are constantly surrounded by new information and ideas which can make it very hard for us to live in the moment.

How many times this week have you been completing a task, whether it be making a cup of tea, washing up or picking up your children from school and been thinking about something else whilst doing it?

We spend a disproportional amount of time either thinking about the future or dwelling on the past. How many times have you got to the end of the week and thought, where did that week go?

Mindfulness is about retraining your brain to live in the present moment. This may sound easy but it’s actually harder than you think. The brain has an amazing ability to wander and let in too much information in one go.

The aim of mindfulness is to learn to filter your thoughts.

‘Living in the moment means letting go of the past and not waiting for the future. It means living your life consciously, aware that each moment you breathe is a gift.’ Oprah Winfrey

There are lots of different ways you can practice mindfulness. It’s all about finding a system that works for you. Starting a meditation practice can also help train your brain to become more mindful.   To help you further I’ve put together a selection of books that will help you to get your mindfulness on.

The majority of the books are reading books but some are activity books to help focus your mind.

  1. Thank you for the suggestions. I’m going to add some of these to my reading list as well. I’m currently doing a mindfulness course through work and finding it very interesting to help me slow my thoughts and think do I actually want to do this.

I'd love to know what you think...
