A ritual is something that you do with purpose by following a certain series of actions. A habit is something that you do subconsciously without meaning or purpose. A lot of us have habits but very few of us have rituals.
I recently read a book that looks at incorporating daily rituals into your life that can help to change your life for the better. Gotta love a good self-help book!

The Significance of 21 Days
‘Once you’ve installed a ritual or a new habit, you don’t have to use any willpower’ Robin Sharma
A psychologist and plastic surgeon in the 1950’s named Maxwell Maltz noticed that it took his clients around 21 days to get used to their new faces. This observation led him to write a book called Psycho-Cybernetics. From the day it was published 21 became the ‘magic number’ for the time it takes to implement and accept change.
What this means is if you want to make changes in your daily life whether by doing daily exercise, eating better or giving up a bad habit you have to do it for a minimum of 21 days before it becomes natural to you.
Theresa goes into this in a lot more detail in her ‘Power of 21‘ section of the book but I thought it was worth mentioning now.

My Views on the Book
Theresa states within her book that to really see changes in your life you must complete every single ritual every day. I must admit that I haven’t done that, instead, I chose the ones I felt would benefit me the most and implemented them into my daily life.
I’m not great with following rules and felt slightly overwhelm just thinking about completing all 21 rituals every day. I do, however, feel that the ones I did chose have made a huge difference to my daily life.
One of the rituals, in particular, that I didn’t take on was the rising earlier one. I am rubbish in the mornings, always have been and probably always will be. I don’t sleep that well as it is and the thought of having to wake up earlier literally feels me with dread!
That one really wasn’t for me. I did, however, love the morning stretch ritual and I know do that religiously every morning before I do anything else. I have a selection of others too but I don’t want to spoil it for you before you’ve read the book yourself.
The book is clearly divided into the three different sections which are great for referring back to a particular part should you need to.
Conclusion
I definitely enjoyed reading this book and I’m glad I did. The rituals that I have decided to complete as part of my daily life have made a difference to the flow of my day. If I ever miss a ritual for one reason or another I do notice a difference in my mindset for that day.
I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to change their daily life.
