Creating a good morning routine can change the flow of your entire day. There is nothing worse than waking up late, rushing around and flying out the door. After a start like that everything just seems to go wrong for the rest of the day.

The reality though is that your day probably wasn’t that bad it was your reactions to your day that made it seem worse. When you start the day in a rush you feel agitated and stressed. This mindset can make even the smallest things seem like a BIG DEAL.

By waking up right, with a positive mindset, it shapes the tone for the rest of your day. You are more able to cope with any issues that arise as you feel calm within yourself.

A good day or a bad day is all a matter of perception

Personally, I am a rubbish morning person! Every day I struggle to get out of bed and motivate myself to start my day. I’ve certainly got better since having kids, more a necessity than a choice but there is still room for improvement.

Recently I have been researching how to have a better morning routine and one way that seems to be extremely effective is creating morning rituals. Rituals, unlike habits, are an act that you perform with purpose and meaning.

By creating a set of morning rituals you are training your brain to think and react in a certain way. Essentially you are programming your brain to have a good day.

7 Morning Rituals to Ensure you Have a Great Day!

Here are 7-morning rituals that I have started to perform every morning and I’m already seeing the benefits.

Stretch

Okay, it’s confession time here, how many of you reach for your phone the minute you open your eyes in the morning? A study found that over 60% of people who used a smartphone charge their phone on their bedside table so it’s easily accessible first thing in the morning.

By reaching for your phone as soon as you awake you are telling your brain that other people and their needs are more important than your own. Be selfish for just one minute and give your body what it needs.

After several hours of limited movement, a good stretch first thing in the morning can do wonders for your wellbeing, other people’s drama can wait. Stop and observe how you feel when you stretch and do it with meaning and purpose.

Morning Affirmations

An affirmation is a positive sentence that you say to yourself, preferably out loud, to trick your mind into thinking a certain way.

Some examples of positive morning affirmations are…

I choose to have a great day

I awake with a sense of happiness and love

My possibilities are endless

You can adapt your own affirmations to suit whatever task you have in front of you on that particular day. Say for example you have a job interview you could say something like… I am relaxed and confident.

Your thoughts have a huge impact on your day so if you start your mind off on the right track it can change your whole day.

Make your Bed

The simple act of making your bed every morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. In the book, *The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do, and How To Change by Charles Duhigg, he states that “making your bed every morning is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking with a budget.”

He calls it a ‘keystone habit’ something that you do that starts a pattern of positive behaviour. It really doesn’t take long to make your bed each morning and if it can set off a chain reaction of positive behaviour then surely it’s worth doing right?

Exercise

If like me you’ve just read that last one and recoiled in horror at the mere thought of exercising in the morning then hear me out. When I say exercise I don’t mean a full-on cardio workout, something as simple as a brisk walk will suffice.

Back in March when I was completing my 10,000 steps a day for Cancer Research I felt refreshed and healthy and ready for anything. Every morning, whether it was raining or sunny the dog and I went for a walk. I have never had a more productive month of work.

My mind was clearer which enabled me to be more focused on the task at hand. If you haven’t got time for a walk then try a few morning yoga stretches. Yoga has many benefits for your health and wellbeing without causing strain to your body. .  It doesn’t have to take long even 5 minutes will make a big difference.

There are lots of morning exercise tutorials online. Do a quick Google and see if you can find something that suits you and your lifestyle.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing has many health benefits including stimulating your lymphatic system, increasing circulation and reducing cellulite. It’s also extremely invigorating, your skin literally tingles with pleasure afterwards.

There are lots of places that you can buy a body brush, some are small and round and some have long handles for those hard to reach places. I particularly like this one from the Ethical Superstore – *Natural Sisal Body Brush. It has a detachable handle which I think is brilliant, as it means you only need one brush for your whole body.

Drink a Glass Of Cold Water

Before you eat anything in the morning you should drink a glass of cold water. The water wakes up your organs, rehydrates your body, stimulates your metabolism and helps your body to flush out any toxins.

It’s also particularly beneficial for anyone, like me, who suffers from IBS. The water helps to reduce the level of acidity within your stomach, which can reduce the cramping.

Set Goals

The last ritual of the morning is taking out 5 minutes to set some goals and formulate a plan for your day. Write down everything that you need to get done and how you plan to achieve those goals. By taking out 5 minutes to formulate a plan it helps to keep you focused throughout the day.

You’ll find that you are more productive and may even have time to spare because you’ve worked through your tasks so efficiently. Setting goals and having a plan can be the difference between coasting through the day without getting much done or riding through the day with purpose and meaning.

How to Perform Morning Rituals

In order to get the full effect of a new morning ritual, you need to be consistent. It’s no good trying it for a few days and then giving up. To really start to notice a difference you need to perform the ritual every day for at least one month.

You don’t have to complete all 7 of the rituals listed above you can pick and choose ones that you feel will work for you. Or create your own rituals.

So what about you? Do you have any morning rituals that help you to have a better day?

  1. Great article! I already do the Make your bed, Exercise and drinking water parts, all of which I really enjoy, I have a list of daily goals too which helps keep me focused.
I like the idea of adding the affirmations to it (my routine) as well. I have a shower brush with a long handle so maybe I can use that for brushing before I get into the shower.
Thanks again for a nicely set out article!

  2. I’m a rubbish morning person… it isn’t until around 11am when I’m sat at my desk at work that I’m properly awake! I may have to try out a few of these tips to wake myself up a little more in the mornings and get my day off to a great start!

  3. I have recently read The Miracle Morning which has encouraged me to rethink my morning routine. I am aiming for a drink of water, exercise, writing, affirmations, reading and thinking about my goals. I’ve had a bit of blip recently due to a few late nights, but it feels good to have a good morning routine.

  4. I agree it is very important to start the day in the right state of mind. I start with the moment my feet touch the floor, I sit there for a few seconds to let the body get accustomed to getting up. Then going to the bathroom I do a slow full body stretch before I have a wash. I have a glass of water then I feel right to tackle the day.
