Screentime for kids is a relatively new issue for parents. It’s certainly not something that my parents ever had to consider. That makes me feel old! And whilst the media can get carried away with the dangers of kids watching screens I definitely think it’s something that needs to be taken into consideration.

Artifical Blue Light & Sleep Disruption for Kids

Sleep disruption for kids is one of the main concerns with prolonged exposure to artificial blue light. The light can reduce the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness.

Now being a parent myself I know for a fact that sleep is one of our main concerns, mainly because we don’t get enough of it. So anything that is going to make that worse is an issue.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

Coincidentally I have just finished reading a book on sleep called *Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker. If you are interested in this subject then I’d definitely recommend reading this book. It covers in a lot more detail the need for melatonin for a good nights sleep, as well as other things like the link between sleep and cancer.

‘A neuroscientist shows how a good night’s shut-eye can make us cleverer, more attractive, slimmer, happier, healthier and ward off cancer… it’s probably a little too soon to tell you that’s it saved my life, but it’s been an eye-opener’ Mark O’Connell, Guardian.

Why Is Artificial Blue Light Bad for Eye Health?

Some of the general health risks include:

  • Reduced melatonin which disrupts sleep
  • Night time exposure is linked to depression, obesity and diabetes
  • A device can emit damaging unnatural light if used for 6-8 hours of screen time per person, per day.

So what’s the solution?

I asked Bloxx if they sell an adult version and this is the response I got… ‘We are in the middle of producing adult versions and are custom made to order. We are looking to produce an adult one, later in the year.’

When they do a will definitely be getting a pair for myself. Don’t tell my son but for now, I’m borrowing his whilst he’s at school.
