Blogging Goals for 2017

My blogging goals for 2017

Last year I wrote a post called Blogging Goals for 2016. I found it really helpful to write down the goals so I could stay focused on what I wanted to achieve. I thought it would be good to look back and see if I managed to achieve those goals and also set some new ones for 2017.

Goal Setting

“All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible.” ~ Orison Swett Marden

It’s a well know fact that if you write down your goals you are more likely to achieve them. Dr Gail Matthews,  at Dominican University, conducted a study into goal setting.

Matthews discovered that the participants that wrote down their goals accomplished significantly more than those that didn’t. She also found that 70 percent of the participants achieved their goal if they sent weekly updates to a friend, compared to 35% of those who didn’t share their goals.

First off here are my blogging goals from 2016…

Last Years Goals

A Complete Re brand for my Blog

I’m please to report that I did indeed achieve this although it wasn’t easy! It was way more involved than I intentionally thought but I did it in the end. Find out why I re branded my blog.

Improve my Photography

I’d like to say I have achieved this one. I took a *photography course that I bought on Groupon. It was with the Shaw Academy and I would highly recommend it. It helped me to approach my photography in a new way.

Double my Income

I’m afraid to say that I did not achieve this one which is a little deflating as I worked so hard this year. I have decided to take a new approach this year which you can read about below in my goals for 2017.

Have a Plan

I did have a plan which I sort of stuck to. Some things from that plan worked and others didn’t, either way I learnt from it. I think the reason this didn’t work very well is because I wasn’t specific enough about what I wanted to achieve in my plan. This year I have a new plan, an in depth plan!

“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” ~ Pablo Picasso

My blogging goals for 2017

Goal: Increase my affiliate income

In case you are not familiar with the term affiliate income it’s where a blogger or website owner can earn commission on products that they recommend on their blog. It doesn’t cost the buyer any more money and gives bloggers the chance to earn a bit of money from their blog.

The Plan: I have already bought Michelle Schroeder-Gardner’s course called *Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. Michelle writes a blog called Making Sense of Cents which is a personal finance blog and in November 2016 she earnt $106,383.89 from her blog! I’d love to earn that in one year let alone one month.

Since starting Michelle’s course and implementing just a few of her strategies I have already made my first few sales through my affiliate links. I can’t wait to put all of her advice into practice and hopefully start earning a decent income from affiliate marketing.

Goal: Double my Page Views

I have been blogging since 2011 which is quite a while but I don’t feel that I have the amount of page views I should have after that amount of time. I really want to, at the very least, double my monthly page views.

Plan: I plan to do this in several ways including…

  • Going through and editing ALL of my old blog posts. This is going to take a while as I have over 600 post on this blog!
  • Implement a Pinterest strategy (see below)
  • Install the Revive Old Posts plugin. This plugin, once installed and set up, automatically shares your old blog posts on your social media accounts.
  • Grow my subscribers list.

Goal: Implement and Conduct a Pinterest Strategy

After doing a lot or research on blogging and how to really excel online I have discovered that for the majority of ‘big bloggers’ most of their traffic referrals come from Pinterest.

I have a fairly good following on Pinterest and I don’t feel I’m utilizing it to it’s full potential. I plan to create a Pinterest strategy to, again, set some goals and start using it properly.

Plan: To help me to do this I have started using *Tailwind which is a Pinterest scheduling tool. I have only been using it for a few days but I’m intrigued to see how it helps me to grow my blog.

Goal: Post Less Frequently

This may seem like an odd one but I read somewhere that a blogger had increased their page view by blogging less frequently. Instead of spending hours each week writing separate blog posts they write 1-2 posts a week but they make those posts longer with more useful information.

Google loves longer posts packed with information so they will bump your posts up the rankings which in turn will increase your page views. I really like this concept as I seem to spend hours creating lots of posts which I find quite stressful.

I love the idea of being more focused with one or two posts a week that are packed with great content. Then I can dedicate more of my time to promoting those posts.

So those are my blogging goals for 2017. Check back soon to see how I’m getting on with them. For updates please ‘Subscribe to my Tribe‘ either at the bottom of this post or in the sidebar.

Blog Business Plan

To help me keep on track with all of the above I have even gone as far as creating a blog business plan which includes setting specific goals that I want to achieve. I have then written down how I plan to achieve these goals step by step with a time frame of when I’d like to achieve them.

Currently I spend a far too much time on my blog without much focus or direction. This is going to change in 2017! My motto for the new year is ‘work smarter not harder.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post. I’d love to know what your goals, blogging or just life in general, are for the new year. Let me know using the comment box below.

    1. Glad you like it Natalie.
I’m looking forward to the posting less frequently part! Sometimes I find myself getting stressed if I haven’t posted for a while and that’s not good. I want to enjoy my blog again not see it as a chore.
