Bloom & Nora Reusable Sanitary Pads Review

Bloom & Nora Reusable Sanitary Pads Review

Over a year ago I decided to make the switch from disposable sanitary products to reusable ones in a bid to help reduce my household waste. For anyone that isn’t familiar with reusable pads they work under the same principle as reusable nappies, in that you use them and then you wash them to use again. Granted this isn’t to everyone’s taste but personally I would never switch back to disposables now.

Since starting my journey into reusables I have tested lots of different products. Some I have got on with really well and others not so much. I guess it comes down to personal preference and individual cycles. The latest pads that I have been trying are by a new company called Bloom & Nora.

“Bloom & Nora- Purveyors of fine period wear.”

I say new company but in fact they are part of the TotsBots group who are marketing leaders in the reusable nappy industry.

‘With a wealth of design and manufacturing experience behind us, we are now branching into a new market and have created a range of beautiful eco-friendly products for ‘real women’

Inspired by early American feminist Amelia Bloomer, a fierce advocate for safer and more practical styles of women’s undergarments, Bloom & Nora invite you to have a cycle with style – and no toxic substances!

The Bloom & Nora Reusable Pads

The pads come in 4 sizes/absorbency levels in either the Bloom or Nora fabric.

Bloom pads

  • natural
  • super absorbent bamboo core
  • come in a range of bright, vibrant colours.
  • Available in mini, midi, maxi and mighty sizes.

Nora pads

  • fast drying
  • stay-dry core
  • come in a range of classic and stain-repellent white and floral prints
  • Available in mini, midi, maxi and mighty sizes.

I opted for the midi and maxi sizes in the bloom range.

Reduce your Waste

In addition to reducing waste and providing a safer alternative to disposable sanitary products, Bloom & Nora pads are also cheaper to use than disposables, costing on average of 3p per use compared to 12p per single use disposable pad. Our pads are also of such high quality that they can be used as often as 150 times over five to seven years!

My Opinion of the Bloom & Nora Reusable Sanitary Pads

I was very pleased with how the pads worked. They are incredibly soft against your skin, which as you can probably imagine is a much nicer feel than the horrible plastic disposable pads.

The pads are held in place with a popper underneath your knickers. They didn’t move once in place so no leaking. I found the shape to fit nicely, some other brands that I have tried in the past can be a bit bulky. The quality of each pad is fantastic!

To wash them I simply put them in my washing machine with the rest of our washing. I do always make sure that I don’t use fabric conditioner though as I have been told in the past that this can have an effect on the absorbency of the pads. I then line dry them. They came out as clean as when I first got them, no stains.

Some people like to pre wash them before they go into the machine to help reduce stains but I have never needed to do this as I have never found stains to be an issue. When you buy your pads you will get a card with wash care instructions on it which is really handy and worth keeping hold of to start with.

After washing I usually straighten the pads out a bit while they are still wet and then hang them out to dry. Just because sometime they can get a bit bunched up although this doesn’t always happen. I think it depends on the material used.

As well as the pads you can also get a wet bag which you use to put in used towels when you are out and about. These are very handy and I would suggest buying a bag as it makes your life easier. The bag pictured below is particularly good as it has two separate compartments and can also be folded up to make a smaller bag.

I am very happy with my Bloom & Nora reusable sanitary pads and I would certainly buy more of them to add to my stash. As always I am happy to answer any questions about switching to reusable pads just leave me a comment below and I’ll get back to you.

  1. Fantastic that you are sharing your positive experience of switching to cloth. Keep up the good work. It’s appreciated by all us makers 🙂

  2. I bought Nora pads. I noticed that we are drying 3 days! So long…. also they are very expensive, too expensive. I am dissapointed. Maybe Bloom are better….

    1. Hi, Anna, I haven’t got any of the Nora ones so can’t really comment on that. However, I do like the Bloom ones. They definitely don’t take 3 days to dry. How are you drying yours?

    2. Hi i dont like the fact that you are using my first name Gina to sell your Sanitary products i will be seeking legal advice as to where you got the name from

  3. I have one bloom and one Nora which I love and I use them as back up whilst using my moon cup, therefore have never really been tested for absorbency with me. My daughter is of the age where she is going to be starting her period any time soon and she is keen to use reusable pads. I have read your review of all the reusable pads and your favourite prior to this review seems to have been the lady days pads. In your opinion, how do the bloom ones compare to the lady days? Thank you very much for your reviews btw, they are providing me with an excellent starting place.

    1. Hi Tracy,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I did respond ages ago but it obviously didn’t go through and I’ve only just noticed!

I now use WUKA period pads and I love them! You can read my full review of them here: https://www.gypsysoul.co.uk/wuka-period-wear-review-ditch-the-disposables/
I’ll be buying some WUKA pants for my daughter when she needs them. (They do teen sets). They really have been life-changing when it comes to my period.

In regards to the pads, I do still use those too, both the Bloom & Nora ones and the Lady Days. I like them both although the Bloom & Nora pads are a little bit bulkier and have a rim around the outside which isn’t as comfortable. I tend to use them on ‘home days’. If I was going to recommend anything to you it would 100% be the WUKA pants.

I hope that helps? Any questions please shout

I'd love to know what you think...
