Exploring The Green Economy Careers

Living a green lifestyle – whether through a zero waste policy or something else that works best for you – is a commitment that gives back. In addition to living green within your home-life, there are also great career options that make it possible for you to keep living green during your working hours by becoming a part of the green economy.

Keep in mind though that these opportunities are not specific to any particular sector, as many sectors tend to either focus specifically on the environment or to incorporate environmental friendliness into their existing line of work.

If this sparks your interest, are you familiar with the career opportunities already available? If there is a specific company or list of companies that you would like to work for, especially in case you already know which exact position you would like to fill within those companies, the best option would be to apply directly.

Though an immediate thought of a career in the green economy leads me to think of an organic farmer or someone in a position to combat climate change, there are so many other options out there that one could get involved with. In case you are part of the ladder, motivated and curious to see what options are out there, I thought I’d share my findings with you here today.

Green engineers

Green engineers help you understand your appliances better, from how much energy they use to how you can use them more effectively and they repair broken appliances. They can also give your house a wattage test.

Urban planner

An urban planner considers the needs of the population and environment to develop plans and programs for the use of land.

Chief sustainability officer

A chief sustainability officer is in charge of a corporation’s “environmental” programmes.

Traceability managers

Traceability managers are in charge of checking the source for the products they sell. Where and how a product has been produced has become increasingly important to consumers, so traceability managers help meet that demand.

Retail energy specialists

Retail energy specialists understand which appliances are the most energy and water efficient and then inform customers of which appliances would be the best investments.

Smart travel co-ordinators

Smart travel coordinators make life on the road much more efficient. They work on implementing new technology systems to cut travel time and congestion.

Clean car mechanics

We have already seen major changes in vehicle options from hybrids to electric cars. Clean car mechanics will have the know-how in order to service and repair clean cars.

Green call centre advisers

Have you ever been at home and called someone to figure out how to use your appliances more effectively to save energy, water and money? The person on the other end of that call is a green call centre adviser.

Outside of the expected roles, the options across different sectors help show the importance of sustainability and living green. Through your daily life, home life and even work life, the options to participate are endless.
