Finding your Tribe when you’re a Nomad by Nature

I am a nomad by nature, both my parents and sister are nomads and I’m slowly but surely turning my other half and kiddies into nomads too. We have moved more times in our lives than I care to count. I literally cannot stay in one place for too long, hence all the moving.

One of the bonuses of moving a lot is that you get to meet so many different people along the way. All of these people I have created memories with. Some good, some bad and some just cringe worthy but they are still memories and life experiences all of which makes me who I am today.

‘Everyone you meet you meet for a reason. They become part of your story whether it’s a good or bad chapter, it was just that, a chapter. Chapters don’t last forever but once read can never be forgotten’.

Find your Tribe

Last night I posted a quote on Instagram, it said ‘Find your tribe, love them hard’.

find your tribe, love then hard

Leading a nomadic lifestyle is fine until you want to find your tribe. By tribe I don’t mean your partner or children I’m talking about your friends. Most ‘modern’ people do not want to move every 2 years and over the years this has meant we’ve had no option but to leave people behind. Something which I have got used to now although the guilt never leaves you.

It can be quite isolating at times. Raising a family is hard work and without a good support network around you it can make it even harder. The parents tend to lean on each other more for support which can cause stress. However for me the thought of being stuck in one place for the rest of our lives fills me with fear and that fear far aways my desire for a permanent tribe. Life choices I guess.

I read an article the other day which got me thinking, it’s called ‘In the Absence of the Village, Mothers Struggle Most‘ by Beth Berry. You should read it! Humans beings were designed to live in tribes, something which is uncommon these days. In her article Beth lists the impacts that living a solitary life has on a parents. I can relate to every one.

So what is the answer for the nomads among us? I’m not even sure there is one, perhaps our aim is to create mini tribes during the different chapters of our lives, make memories never to be forgotten and move on.

For me personally it’s time to move on again, to where yet we’re not sure but I’m looking forward to the adventure.

  1. 100% agree with your mini tribes theory, when we moved around all over Scotland or lived in Singapore we had to do that or else we’d have been all alone.
People act like we were all alone or asked when we would be heading ‘home’ but we don’t really have one….and that’s ok (apart from when it costs a fortune sending Christmas cards)!

    1. I’m glad it’s not just us then Shelia.
Wow living in Singapore must have been quite an experience! How long were you there? Our nomad adventures tend to just be in the UK now that we have children although I’d love to live in France at some point.
I totally understand what you mean about ‘home’, my home isn’t one place any more.

I'd love to know what you think...
