Wherever possible I like to take a natural approach to most things in our life, whether that be our diet, beauty regimes or pain relief. I’m slowly but surely switching all of our bathroom products to natural alternatives and I’m also slowly reducing the number of chemicals we use in our home.

Slow is the operative word here as it’s not something that happens overnight. It takes time to research and find suitable, effective alternatives. I figure if I switch one thing at a time I won’t overwhelm myself.

One thing I’d particularly like to focus on this year is switching to natural pain relief rather than relying on store bought drugs. Luckily, we are a fairly healthy family and rarely get ill, which I believe is mainly due to our healthy diet and lifestyle but when we do I’d love to use natural alternatives if possible.

You might wonder why anyone would want to make that switch and I guess everyone has their own reasons for doing it. For me personally, it’s to regain control over what goes into our bodies.

According to the NHS almost half of all adults take prescription drugs. The most commonly prescribed drugs were for things like high blood pressure, cholesterol lowering statins and painkillers.

Our dependency on prescription drugs is mainly due to patients wanting a quick fix for their symptoms, however, I believe if we spent more effort and time on making lifestyle changes we could significantly reduce our need for the drugs.

How To Overcome Pain

I recently read a book called *How to Overcome Pain

Natural approaches to dealing with everything from arthritis, anxiety and back pain to headaches, PMS and IBS.

It’s written by registered osteopath and naturopath Leon Chaitow. Leon is also the editor of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies and Honorary Fellow and former senior lecturer at the University of Westminster, London. Author of more than 60 books, including *Holistic Pain Relief and *Fibromyalgia and Muscle Pain.

‘Whether you suffer from back pain, headaches, migraines, arthritis, stomach problems or repetitive strain injury, health expert Leon Chaitow can help. Delve into his complete guide to natural pain relief to discover a wide range of tools and techniques that will empower you to take control of your pain.’

Chapters

  • Understanding your pain
  • Positive Attitudes
  • Finding Peace
  • Bodywork and Rehabilitation
  • Complementary Therapies
  • Eating Well
  • Types of Pain

The book is packed full of tips for helping to relieve pain in a natural way. Below I have highlighted a few of my favourite sections.

Nature’s Bounty

One section of the book that I found particularly interesting was the Nature’s Bounty chapter. Here Leon covers natural alternatives to store-bought drugs such as aloe vera for burns or bites. Personally, we have an aloe vera plant in our kitchen for this very reason and I can confirm it does indeed work.

How To Advert a Tension Headache

Something that I do suffer with on a regular basis is headaches so another section of the book that I found really useful was the section called How to Advert a Tension Headache. Leon has a really simple method for preventing the headache before it becomes fully established and all the bits you need to perform it can be found in your home.

I also recently read in another book (review to follow shortly) that one woman cured her headaches purely by learning how to breathe properly. A large amount of us ‘shallow breathe’ without even knowing it and this can lead to all sorts of problems including headaches.

“Shallow breathing is the root of all evil but conscious deep breathing restores and secures our souls” Desmond Green

I found this really interesting and I now make a conscious effort to put aside some time each morning to practise deep breathing.

Better Breathing

Leon covers breathing techniques in his Better Breathing section of the book. You’ll also find some easy breathing exercises that you can complete yourself at home.

Introduction to Mindfulness

In his Introduction to Mindfulness section, Leon talks about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation. He recommends that you set some time aside every day to meditate. Personally, I meditate every night before bed and I’ve never slept better.

In Conclusion

Obviously, I have only covered a few sections of the book in this post, there is a lot more to it. I really enjoyed reading this book and picked up some fantastic tips and tricks for switching to natural alternatives.

How To Overcome Pain is particularly good for people with chronic pain disorders such a fibromyalgia, IBS or arthritis.

Tip: If you don’t have time to read the entire book then the index at the back is useful if you wish to look up a certain symptom or disorder.

  1. This sounds like a really interesting book – I’m always loath to take pills, even the simple paracetamol so it would be good to get some new ideas of how to deal with pain naturally.

  2. As someone who is currently suffering with chronic back pain, I am desperate to find alternatives to the prescription drugs my Dr is offering me. They make me feel so sick, and having two young children at home, I struggle to function while on the drugs. I will certainly look into this book, so thanks for this. xx
