Last Wednesday evening my partner and I went to the launch of the new Market Street Cafe in Newton Abbot, Devon. The cafe is a result of Young Devon and River Cottage teaming up to create a new venue where young chefs can work and train simultaneously in a real live restaurant environment.
Being local to Newton Abbot we were keen to see what it was all about, especially as the town is in desperate need of some new places to eat out.
When we arrived the place was already buzzing with people excited to hear about the new project. It was hard to get any pictures of the decor as there were too many people in the way. They’ve gone for a fresh, rustic, farming style which fits in nicely with the type of food offering they are aiming to provide.
When we got in we were treated to some bubbles and waited for the food to start coming out.
The ethos behind their food is Seasonal, Local, Organic and Wild…
The food really was fantastic! Loads of flavour and really nicely presented and it was great to see the young chef’s hard at work.
Hogs Head Farm Pulled Pork with Seasonal Slaw
Chorizo Scotch Egg with Aloli
Savoury Drop Scones & Mock Marmalade
Teign Valley Curried Mussels
Treacle Tart & Spiced Ginger Pudding
In all we had a lovely evening, the food was great and we can’t wait to go back another day!
The cafe is open to the public from Wednesday 29th April 2015. To start with it will just be open on a Wednesday lunchtime but their plan is to open every day once they have enough young apprentices on the team. They also plan to open two evenings at some point in the future.
