This Friday is National Upcycling Day, part of National Recycling Week which aims to encourage people to rethink what they throw away. The idea is to encourage people to get creative by taking a look at furniture they already own and thinking about how they can give it a new lease of life.
What is Upcycling?
‘Upcycling isn’t just the practice of transforming old materials into useable objects, it’s the process of breathing a new lease of life into well used and loved items to give them a new story and personality. All this while at the same time creating something that is useful, functional and beautiful.’ Gumtree
Past Upcycling Projects
I’m not new to upcycling, I have transformed many of our old household items. The most recent being turning some old photo frames into jewellery holders.
I also turned an old tea chest into a laundry basket, which still takes pride of place on our upstairs landing.
What I Intend to Upcycle for National Upcycling Day
For National Upcycling Day I intended to transform our dining room table. We got it years ago now at a big antique warehouse with the plan of upcycling it. Years later that still hasn’t happened so I’m making it my mission to get it done once and for all.
As we have a sort of vintage industrial theme going on in this room my plan is to transform the table to reflect this style. I intend to paint the legs in a grey colour and strip the top and keep it natural.
Rust-Oleum Products for Upcycling
These are the products that I’m going to use to make this happen; Rust-Oleum surface primer in grey, Rust-Oleum satin finish furniture paint in slate grey and Rust-Oleum furniture lacquer.
Upcycling Inspiration
I have been inspired by some images I have found on Pinterest and I thought I’d share them with you so you can see what I intended to create.
Check back soon to see how I get on.
Its going to look great Gina:) Hope you have great weather tomorrow so you can paint to your hearts desire in the fresh air.
Yes nice weather would be handy. It has been lovely today but it’s looking like a storm is brewing down here. Fingers crossed! If all else fails I shall just have to turf the other half’s motorbike out of the garage and do it in there 🙂
Cute!
I want to do something similar to make a massive pin board.
Just need to find a large frame.
