I never used to be much of a spa girl, I always saw it as a bit girly and not really my thing. I couldn’t understand how people enjoyed just lounging around all day and dipping in and out of various plunge pools; but then I had children! Suddenly a day of just sitting around in peace became very appealing.
I was recently invited along to a brand new spa in Taunton, Somerset. It’s part of the Blackbrook Pavillion leisure centre but has it’s own new building on the side. The centre was really easy to find and there is free parking.
Although the spa is located at the sports centre it’s actually run by a company called Spa Experience. They have locations all over the UK and they cover a range of over 50 health, beauty and relaxation treatments as well as the Spa Day experiences.
The first thing I did when I arrived was use their thermal spa which had a hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna, a Monsoon shower and an ice fountain. The idea behind the thermal spa is to heat the body, cool the body and repeat. Apparently the combination of heat followed by cold can help to relieve pain, relax muscles, detox your skin and aid blood flow.
On arrival I was provided with a bag which contained a dressing gown, towel and flip flops.
The Monsoon Shower
The monsoon shower was a new experience for me. It had several settings to choose from which produce different shower options like a warm tropical downpour or cool water Scotch mist. You can choose a hot or cold setting depending on where you last were. So for example if you had been in the hot sauna you could then choose a cool rain setting.
After I had sufficiently boiled and then cooled myself I spent a while in the relaxation room reading some magazines, something that I never get to do at home! I also got to enjoy a complimentary glass of prosecco. If you don’t want anything alcoholic there is also a drinks station which had water infused with lemon, orange and mint. It was very refreshing.
As well as the Thermal Spa there is also a range of treatments available. I had the Total Spa Experience Treatment which included a full body exfoliation, followed by a warm cocoon envelopment and a face & scalp massage. The treatment ended with a hot stone massage. It was very relaxing and my skin felt lovely afterwards. I didn’t want it to end.
As I said earlier Spa Experience have locations all over the country so check out their website to find your nearest one.
