This month we are taking part in an energy saving challenge with MoneySuperMarket. To help us with the challenge we have received these handy energy monitors from Efergy.

The Aim of the Energy Saving Challenge

The aim is to take an energy usage reading at the start of the challenge and see if over the course of a month we can reduce our energy consumption which will help us to save money.

I personally feel that we are already pretty good at keeping our energy usage down but hopefully, these gadgets will help us to see where we can improve on this.

‘The elite wireless energy monitor updates every 6 seconds so you can instantly see the impact of turning a light on or off, boiling the kettle or using your tumble dryer. It has an innovative memory function that allows you to see how much you have used today, yesterday and in the last week or month.

The elite monitor also displays your daily average so you can see when you are using more electricity than normal and see how your average usage reduces as you change the way you do things’.

So far tonight we have learnt that boiling our kettle with enough water for 2 cups of tea cost us 1p. Which doesn’t sound like much but if you think about how many times you boil the kettle every day or every week then that adds up to quite a bit!

The energy system was really easy to set up.

Now we just have to monitor it and see if we can make any changes to save us more money and reduce our carbon footprint.

I fear that I am going to become obsessed with staring at the monitor and spend my life running around the house turning everything off!

If you are taking part in the challenge I’d love to hear from you, perhaps we can compare notes?

  1. I borrowed an energy meter from a friend (one you plug in, not a fancy one like yours) and yes, I got a bit obsessed with measuring everything. It’s a great insight, isn’t it?! Biggest surprise for me was the fridge. And yes, the kettle is power-hungry too. I’d love to know how much energy the lightbulbs use…we’ve just switched to LED ones.

    1. I just can’t get over how much power some of our appliances use! Our microwave uses a lot of power just being plugged in. We have low energy bulbs in all of our sockets now they are definitely worth the initial extra money. 🙂

    1. I’m definitely liking ours so far! I’m most interested to see how much energy our appliances use when they are in standby mode.

I'd love to know what you think...
