What is Hygge and Why you Should Embrace it in your Home?

There are certain ‘buzz words’ that float around every year. This year one word that I seem to be hearing a lot is Hygge (pronounced hue-gah). Hygge is a Danish word that cannot be translated exactly into one single English word. It’s more a way of life than a word. The best way to describe it is a lifestyle craze, one of maximum comfort and cosiness. It’s all about living well and living simply

This sounds like exactly the sort of thing I need in my life right now. With the weather rapidly turning colder and the nights drawing in quicker November is the perfect time to bring a little Hygge into your home.

5 Ways to Bring a bit of Hygge into your Home

Stock up on Blankets

In my opinion, there is nothing better than after a hard day working or looking after little ones, snuggling up with a blanket on the sofa. I personally have a basket with blankets in our lounge for anyone to grab as and when required.

Layer yourself up

When it’s cold outside nothing beats having a big old scarf around your neck to keep the chill off or when you’re inside wearing toastie thick socks to keep your toes warm.

Hot wine

What better way to relax and warm yourself through than with a nice hot glass of wine or perhaps cider if you prefer. I have just discovered that my slow cooker is perfect for this, it keeps the wine at just the right temperature and as an added bonus makes the house smell lovely.

When we visited Budapest in 2016 there were hot wine stalls on every corner. They even have wine tours around the city. It was a great way to warm up in the freezing weather and gave us a nice rosy glow.

Candles

Candles are a simple and relatively cheap way of creating an inviting and homely atmosphere in your home. Alternatively, if you don’t like the thought of candles in your home fairy lights also do the job.

Slow down

Stop what you are doing and have a few minutes to yourself. Grab one of your new cosy blankets, make yourself a cuppa and sit down with a new book. We live in such a fast past world these days and making time for rest is becoming increasingly important.

The Little Book of Hygge

There is a book that I have noticed recently called *The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well. A lot of my friends have bought it so I’m guessing it’s pretty good and it’s only £4.99 which I thought was pretty reasonable.

I have put it on my Christmas wish list. No doubt a review will follow after Christmas. If you have already read it I’d love to know your thoughts on it.

  1. I’ve heard so much about this I love the idea of all things calm and cosy. I’ve never had hot wine or cider before, only mulled wine so this is something I need to try. Love the blanket basket. x

  3. I’ve heard of Hygge before, and it sounds exactly what I like to do anyway! 🙂 Blankets and candles and laid on the sofa with a book is my favourite.
Not tried hot wine before, and the thought of putting wine in my slow cooker has never occurred to me and just blown my mind!!
May have to try some mulled wine in it soon.

    1. For Halloween last year I had mulled wine in our slow cooker for the grown-ups. It went down really well and was handy for refills as it just stays hot in the pot without you worrying that it’s going to overheat and start boiling.

It’s great for Christmas too if you have guest over as they can just help themselves with a ladle. As well as the wine you can also use it for hot chocolate. Another blogger (I forget who now) set up a hot chocolate station in their kitchen with add-ons like marshmallows and cream. Very cool!

I'd love to know what you think...
