This year will be my 3rd year of joining in with Zero Waste Week, although we are certainly not a zero waste household yet I would love to get there one day. I know for a fact that you cannot go zero waste over night but you can make small changes every month to help you along your way.
What is Zero Waste Week?
‘Zero Waste Week is the annual awareness campaign for reducing landfill. Helping you save money and preserve resources since 2008.’
Running from the 5th – 9th September 2016
Zero Waste Week 2014
For the first year that I joined in my pledge was to reduce our food waste. I did this by getting a composter for the garden. Now all of our non-meat food waste goes in there. I also collect all of our scrap vegetables, freeze them and make veg stock out of them when I have enough.
Zero Waste Week 2015
For the second year I made the switch from disposable sanitary towels to reusable ones. I still use them to this day and would never go back to disposables.
Zero Waste Week 2016
For this year’s Zero Waste Week the theme is ‘Use it Up!’ Focusing on reducing food waste. As I already said we now have a composter for our food scraps but I’d like to look into further reducing our food waste. My aim is to eventually get rid of the food waste bin altogether although I’m not sure how you do this when it comes to bones and meat that cannot go into the composter. Any ideas most welcome!
My pledge for this year’s Zero Waste Week is to have an empty food waste bin at the end of the week.
I’m really not sure if I am going to be able to achieve this or not. We certainly have a lot less food waste then we used to but it’s never been empty. Over the course of the week I shall document my progress on my blog. Wish me luck!
Food Waste Facts
Here’s a few interesting facts for you about food waste…
- The average household throws away £50 of food per month.
- Around 30-50% of the food produced on the planet never reaches a human stomach.
- According to the United Nations, one in eight people across the world go to bed hungry every night.

Zero Waste is less about waste and more about individual behavioral change. If we are to have Zero Waste, we need to 1) Rethink and 2) Redesign how we consume and discard. We are out of sync with how nature works, Zero Waste is really about getting back in sync with using our good common sense again.

I couldn’t agree more Buddy! We certainly live in a throw away culture these days. I think it boils down to an out of sight out of mind thought process, no one really stops to think about where ‘away’ is.
