As you may have read in previous posts, we are trying to live a more frugal and sustainable life. So I thought we would give foraging a go; I’m not going to say no to free food.

Foraging in Devon with kids

Β So off we went with our carrier bags ready to fill them up with our finds. Along our journey we found the river at the bottom of the village and the kiddies had great fun throwing rocks in and going for a paddle. With Lowenna in her finest foraging gear, complete with sparkly skirt and lacy top!

The first bit of free food we found were these hazelnuts butΒ  they are not quite ready for picking yet.

Foraging for Acorns & Blackberries

We also found some acorns and blackberries but again none of them were ready for picking.

We also found these but I’m not really sure what they are. I was thinking maybe rosehip or hawthorn. Any ideas anyone? We left them there, I didn’t really fancy a trip to A&E later with food poisoning.

Foraging

Even though we ended up coming back empty handed the kiddies still had a great time out and about in the fresh air.

I tried my hardest to make it exciting and to and get them interested in the prospect of foraging but being kids they were far more interested in the drains by the side of the road!

At least it wore them both out. I think we will try again in a few weeks when everything is ripe and ready and as a plus we know where it all is now.

    1. Yes it wasn’t a very practical outfit, bless her. You should have grabbed them, we have a plum tree in the garden but they’re not ready yet.

  1. What a wonderful post Gina – I love the idea that you went foraging and it looks beautiful where you are. It will be interesting to see what you can find next time. I love that they’re taking an interest in the drain, my toddler does that too! Thank you for sharing #whatsthestory

  2. Ahhh that’s lovely – looks like the kids really enjoyed it! I get such a sense of fulfilment out of making something out of nothing, particularly food. The nuts and berries will be fab in a few weeks time πŸ™‚ #MagicMoments

  3. What fun! I especially like the foraging outfit with sparkly skirt and lacy top! Your post reminds me of when we lived down a lane with lots of blackberries and our girls picked them all before anyone else could and then tried to charge passing motorists 25p per berry!!

  4. Look’s great fun! We went blackberrying last year which was brilliant. Except the kids wouldn’t eat them afterwards…..

  5. What is it with kids and drains? We could be at the most exciting place and a drain will always stop my son in his tracks. Lovely photos by the way!!

    1. Thank you. Mine are the same, anywhere we go the drains are always the highlight of the day that and puddles if it’s been raining. πŸ™‚

  6. Looks like a fun day! We love hedgerow fruit picking and can’t wait for the blackberries to ripen! And we’re lucky there are plenty of rose-hips about to make yummy rose-hip syrup to make fruity hot drink in the winter – a staple favourite in our house!
