You may have already seen my minimalist garden makeover post. This week I thought I’d show you our nautical themed downstairs toilet makeover.

The downstairs toilet is often a room that gets overlooked when it comes to home decorating but as we always seem to have so many guests in our home we thought it was worth the investment.

Toilet Makeover: Before

What’s funny is that I didn’t think our toilet was that bad before we decorated it but when I look back on the before photos now it really didn’t look great!

Toilet Makeover Step One: Get Rid of the Old

The first thing we did was rip out the old flooring. It was a blue 90’s style pattern which although it was in fairly good condition dated the room.

Toilet Makeover Step Two: Preparing the Walls

The next job was to fill any holes and mask up the room ready for painting. We opted for a really dark blue for the top half of the walls and white on the bottom.

On the wall with the toilet, we wanted the blue going all the way down to the floor as we thought it would be a nice contrast to the white toilet unit. We also bought a new toilet seat as the old one had seen better days.

Toilet Makeover Step Three: Painting

Time to paint the walls. The blue paint we used was called *Sapphire Salute by Dulux in matt. It went on really well and we’d definitely recommend it.

At this point, I also wanted to update the taps but we discovered that it’s not as simple as just replacing them as the water system is a hidden behind the fixed unit and we didn’t want to replace all of that. I’m now thinking of using new tap revivers instead.

Toilet Makeover Step Four: Flooring

We spent ages trying to find the right flooring! I found one that I loved on eBay but unfortunately, it wouldn’t have looked right as it had quite a large pattern and the floor in the toilet isn’t very big.

After that, I didn’t like anything else I looked at for ages! Then eventually I found one I liked on eBay.

Once we put the new flooring down the room felt completely transformed.

Toilet Makeover Step Five: Beautify

The final step was to add the finishing touches.

I already had the nautical porthole mirror which I got from Next a few years ago now. I also already had the puffin and shells which we got whilst on holiday in the Scillies. The only new things I added to the room was the industrial style light fitting and the octopus print and frame.

I found the octopus wall print *here on Etsy and I love it! This photo really doesn’t do it justice as the window is in front of it. I spent ages trying to find a chrome frame to fit it and in the end, I gave up.  Then the other half happened to be in B&M and he found one without even trying.

The industrial light fitting came from eBay.

Here’s the finished downstairs toilet makeover in a few photos as it’s impossible to get one of the whole room…
