Sending cards has always been a love hate relationship for me. I love to give cards as it lets the other person know I’m thinking about them. However, I hate the waste and the environmental impact that’s involved. With cards there really is only two options; stop sending them altogether or find sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives.

That is where Panda Joy comes in.

Panda Joy

Recently I was contacted by Panda Joy, they make sustainable, tree free, bamboo and cotton eco-friendly greeting cards

“Our belief is that sustainability and sharing Joyful moments can, and should, go hand-in-hand.”

All of the Panda Joy greeting cards are 100% tree-free and consist of 75% bamboo and 25% cotton linter. This eliminates the need for virgin trees. The family-run business is based in Oxfordshire and was born out of their shared love for craft, design, animals and sustainability.

The idea for Panda Joy started during the pandemic when the family saw a surge in greeting cards being sent as families desperately tried to stay in touch with each other. Although a nice gesture meant to forge deeper connections with others the environmental impact is very high. Over 1 billion Christmas cards are thrown away every year and that’s just the Christmas cards. This didn’t sit well with the Panda Joy family so they looked for a more sustainable alternative to create connections, thus Panda Joy was born.

The vision was simple; develop a product that would contribute to the conservation of the planet and also have a positive impact on communities around the world. Their motto Naturally Sustainable, Naturally Joyfuller®™ perfectly sums up what their brand stands for.

All of the Panda Joy cards are made using EKOenergy, a renewable energy source.

What’s the deal with bamboo?

If you’re a regular here you will know that I have talked about the sustainable properties of bamboo before. I use quite a few bamboo products in our home including bamboo toothbrushes, reusable bamboo face wipes and bamboo bedding.

Bamboo can be a sustainable crop if it’s managed correctly. It’s an incredibly fast growing plant that doesn’t require any harmful fertilisers or pesticides. It grows to full maturity within 3-5 years. It regrows from it’s own roots so doesn’t need to be replanted every year. It also requires less water and labour to grow and maintain it. All of these properties have made it a popular choice when it comes to sustainable crops.

The bamboo source used by Panda Joy is not a food source for pandas which is something that people often worry about.

Here are some random bamboo facts for you:

  • Bamboo is actually classed as a grass not a tree
  • A bamboo plant can live for 120 years in the wild
  • Bamboo absorbs more carbon dioxide than any other plant
  • Humans can eat bamboo
  • Bamboo can cool down the air around it by up to 8 degrees in summer
  • There’s over 1,500 species of bamboo around the world
  • Thomas Edison used a carbonised bamboo filament in his first lightbulb

Are bamboo cards more eco-friendly than recycled paper cards?

In short, yes. This is due to the fact that bamboo requires less water to grow compared to trees as well as growing at a much faster rate. The resulting effect is that bamboo greeting cards use less energy than both standard and recycled greetings cards.

The other risk when purchasing recycled greeting cards is you cannot guarantee how much of the card has actually been recycled. Green washing is very real and in some cases BPA has been found in some recycled greeting cards. All Panda Joy cards are 100% BPA free.

Giving back

As well as offering sustainable bamboo greeting cards, Panda Joy also gives back by committing one third of their profits to organisations and charities that are dedicated to their shared mission of making the world a better place.

For every Panda Joy card sold a portion of the profits goes towards supporting environmental organisations. Currently they are working with Micro Loan Foundation, Lend With Care and  Ecologi
