Since turning vegan I have tried a variety of different vegan cheese and I’m here to tell you that not all vegan cheese are created equal! You have to try a variety of different ones until you find ones you like. Today we’re going to be looking into why you should consider switching to vegan cheese and what Violife has to offer.

The rise in veganism

There is no denying that there has been a steep rise in people turning vegan over the last 10 years.

According to a new report commissioned by No Meat May:

  • 15% of the population will be vegan and half of the UK will be vegetarian or vegan by 2030
  • Air protein will be a key carbon neutral method of food production within the next decade
  • The alternative meat market is expected to be worth around £10 Billion by 2025

“With much more social acceptance normalising meals without meat, plus the extensive availability for alternatives, it follows that we can expect to see continued changes in the way consumers shop and eat.” says Dr Morgaine Gaye

Dr Morgaine Gaye is a Food Futurologist who looks at food and eating from a social, cultural, economic, trend, branding and geo-political perspective.

This rise in people choosing to become vegan or vegetarian has led to people searching for meat and dairy alternatives. That is where companies such as Violife come in.

Who is Violife?

The word Violife was developed from the Greek word Vios, meaning life. Violife has over 30 years of experience in vegan products, both in the development and production. They create a whole range of 100% vegan alternatives to cheese.

On their website it states that they are ‘the number one award-winning vegan alternative to cheese brand.’

Why switch to vegan cheese alternatives?

Violife teamed up with a leading sustainability consultant company called Quantis to calculate the environmental impact of Violife vegan cheese products compared to dairy cheese. The findings were very interesting!

They looked into all of the main environmental factors that companies should consider including where the ingredients are sourced, manufacturing processes, transportation, packaging, distribution and even packaging disposal.

The results… ‘Violife products have less than half the climate footprint and occupy less than one third of the land’  compared to the same quantities of dairy cheese. So not only does their vegan cheese actually taste nice, it’s also better for the planet. You can find the entire study here

Just because it’s vegan doesn’t mean it’s healthier

I think it’s important to point out here that just because something is labelled as vegan it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s healthier. Vegan ready meals and processed foods can still be high in fats and sugars. If you want to go down the route of healthy vegan then a plant-based wholefoods diet should be your aim. That’s not to say you can’t occasionally treat yourself to the vegan alternatives that are available such as vegan cheese.

Ways to use vegan cheese

The good news is there are lots of ways to use vegan cheese, especially when it’s good vegan cheese like Violife. If you’re lazy like me you can eat it straight out of the packet or you can exert a bit more effort and add it to your vegan recipes

Over at Me, Him, the dog and a baby they created a vegan cheese board with their vegan cheese, as well as simple cheese sandwiches, an omelette (not vegan) for their daughter and on top of a pizza.

Becky from the Lifestyle Blogger UK uses vegan cheese to create a creamy vegan tomato macaroni cheese recipe.

Sarah from Life in Full Flavour used the grated vegan cheese on nachos and baked the camembert with the addition of salsa on top.

Faded Spring created another vegan cheese board platter, a Cheesy Vegan Spaghetti And Meatballs and a Simple Italian Vegan Salad.

Why I like Violife vegan cheese

Before one of the team members from Violfe got in touch I had already used their vegan cheese products before and I’d been impressed by their range. I love the fact that their range is:

  • Free from allergens
  • Free from nuts
  • Free from soy
  • Free from GMO
  • Free from Preservatives

They are also enriched with Vitamin B12. Since switching to a plant-based whole foods diet I have tried a variety of different vegan cheeses and believe me they are not all made equal! Some I have tried are completely tasteless, others are really chewy and some are just disgusting. Violife on the other hand are really tasty and they melt much better than other vegan cheese alternatives.

I was sent the following products from their range:

  • Smoky Cheddar Flavour Slices
  • Le Rond Camembert Flavour
  • Epic Mature Cheddar Flavour
  • Original Flavour Slices
  • Original Flavour Grated

My favourite so far is the Smoky Cheddar Flavour Slices. They taste amazing! I used them by melting one slice under the grill on top of my beetroot burger. I then added some homemade guacamole and a gluten free bun to create a very tasty vegan burger.

I’ve also been snacking on the slices straight from the fridge which is naughty but they’re so tempting. It’s incredibly morish.

The mature cheddar, slices and grated options I have tried before and I like them all. I’m yet to try the Le Rond Camembert Flavour and I’m intrigued to see how this compares to traditional camembert. I was a huge camembert fan! I’m just a bit cheesed-out this week although it’s certainly on the menu this weekend when we’re away on the boat, along with my Nozeco. I may even attempt my own vegan cheese board.

According to the accompanying recipe guide for the camembert it can be cooked in the same way as traditional camembert and takes approximately 5 minutes in the oven. I’ll take some pictures and let you know how I get on.
