Thrifty Thursday – Buying School Uniform

Tomorrow I’ve got to go to the ‘new parents day’ at the school for Lj before she starts in September. It’s where they tell us all about the school, what she will be doing there and where they rob us blind by charging an extortionate amount of money for school uniform that we can’t possible buy anywhere else as it all has to have the school logo on it! Can you sense I’m annoyed?

The cardigans alone are now £15.50 each and she will need a minimum of 3. That’s £46.50 just on those! I have no doubt, if she’s anything like her brother, she will lose at least one of those in the first week, never to be seen again.

I’m annoyed because, being a thrifty minded person, I very rarely pay full price for anything these days as there are always better deals out there to be had. I’m frustrated that there is no way around this one. The school does hold 2nd hand uniform sales every so often but you can’t rely on it because you can never guarantee that they will have the items you require. I think this is one of those cases where I’m just going to have to grin and bear it and fork out a load of money for clothes that probably won’t even fit next term.

I did have the idea of starting up a Facebook page for the school where parents can sell their used uniforms but I’m not sure I have the energy or time to maintain yet another Facebook page at the moment. Has anyone else done this for their school? If so I’d love to hear about it.

  1. Thanks for hosting – I have voted this week 🙂 Uniform is a tricky one I have always bought them from school but I don’t buy the polo shirts as I can get them from Asda for £2 for a pack of 2 instead of £7.50 for 1 .

  2. Hi Gina Thanks so much for the top pick! I feel for you with the price of school uniforms. Although I never had to buy them I spent a lot of money on back to school clothes. It got to be a lot when they were teenagers and they just had to wear the latest fashions. It was fun raising them but expensive! Have a great day!

  3. Ugh! I feel your pain….Our school won’t organise a 2nd hand uniform sale & a Facebook group was set up selling old jumpers with the logo on but it mysteriously kept getting closed down….Everyone knows the school had something to do with that…They certainly know how to make money….I am lucky to have a good group of friends and we keep passing the jumpers down….

I'd love to know what you think...
