A while ago I wrote about the switch I made to reusable period pads. I made the switch a few years ago now and I haven’t looked back since. They really did make a huge difference to my ‘period experience’.
Last week I was contacted by a company called *WUKA to see if I would like to try out their periodwear pants. I’ve never tried period pants before so really wanted to give them ago.
I used them during my last cycle and I thought I’d share my experience of them with you.
‘WUKA Period Wear means you can have ultra-hygienic and luxuriously comfortable periods. Our Period Wear combines a hi-tech absorbent layer with antibacterial properties with eco-friendly fabrics that are incredibly soft to the touch, kind to the environment and comfortable to wear.’
WUKA stands for Wake Up Kick Ass!
How They Work
WUKA are reusable period underwear. You can wear them up to 8 hours depending on your flow. They can replace pads, tampons and cups.
They’re made from 5 different layers which absorb and lock away your flow. They’re also…
On the website, WUKA states that 1 of their reusable ‘heavy’ flow pants is equivalent to 4 tampons. Which means you are also going to save money in the long run.
What’s the WUKA Story?
WUKA was created by Ruby, a passionate environmental scientist who’s managed to combine her scientific knowledge and passion for lean startup methodology to solve the problems of disposable menstrual products.
“I was born and brought up in beautiful Nepal where, upon turning 12, I saw a different side to my culture. Nachune, the Nepali name for period literally translates as ‘untouchable‘, which is what women are told they are when they start to bleed”
Ruby and her sister used to use their Mum’s old saree as reusable period pads.
“My aim with WUKA Wear is to bring science and design together to make menstruation hassle free and little bit luxurious.”
My Experience of WUKA
If I’m being completely honest before I tried WUKA I didn’t really feel they would be much different to the reusable pads that I currently used.
I was wrong!
In the whole 24 years that I have been having my period, there hasn’t been a single day where I wasn’t aware that I had my period. Whether it is the constant changing of towels, the rubbing from the disposable plastic pads or the bulky feeling in your pants. However, when I wore the *WUKA pants I actually forgot I had my period.
The main reason for this is because you can’t feel them. It just feels like you are wearing normal knickers. The second reason was that you don’t have to change them as often as you do a towel. One pair of WUKA pants can last you up to 8 hours depending on your flow.
Why I Love WUKA
- They’re really comfortable -As I said above you don’t even notice you’ve got them on
- They last a lot longer than a pad or tampon
- They are reusable so no waste
- They’re made from anti-bacterial fabric which fights bacteria and smell
- You can wash them in your washing machine on a normal cycle at 40 degrees
- They’re eco-friendly
- No leakage – they’re made using a Micro Modal high-tech fabric
- Designed in the UK
- They can completely replace the need for pads, tampons or cups
One big plus is that they will save you money too. Obviously, you will have to pay out to buy the pants to start with but once you have them you’re good to go.

After having over 23 years of periods I really, really wish these had been invented when I was younger. They would have made my whole period experience so much easier. It does make me happy though to know that my daughter will have much better options than I had.
I’ll definitely be suggesting she gives WUKA ago when she starts.
How Much Do They Cost
You can either buy the pants individually or you can buy them as a pack.
- Heavy Period Pants currently cost £24.99
- Light Period Pants currently cost £23.99
Buying a cycle set is the most cost-effective way to buy your WUKA pants and they’re currently on sale! A 3 pack cycle set is currently priced at £69.97 (normally £74.97).
Although £69.97 might seem like a lot in one go that is less than the average persons spends on periods in a year. I worked out that I used to spend around £84 every year on my period!
Prices may change so please take a look on their website to see the current prices. As well as the period pants you can also get bralettes and washbags. There is also free shipping to the UK.
